This review paper is the result of a collaborative project that brought together CENS and CEU researchers and was led by professor Peter Balázs. It offers a critical account of political, social, economic and cultural changes undertaken in East and Central European countries, which are now EU member states. It also discusses the future options for EU New Member States, in a permanently shifting context, marred by increasing inter and transnational unresolved issues.
