Event Report - “The internal and external policies of China and its relations with the EU”

CEU Center for EU Enlargement Studies (CENS), the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Hungary, CEU Rectorate, and CEU Department of International Relations and European Studies (IRES) hosted a public lecture on 13 February 2012 entitled “The internal and external policies of China and its relations with the EU”. The lecture was delivered by Ambassador H.E. Mrs Jian Gao to a distinguished group of diplomats, ambassadors, students and university professors.

The lecture was divided into four main parts: first, the current economic situation in China and a brief history of its development; second, China’s foreign policy objectives; third, China’s main goals for 2012 among which economic growth, people’s livelihood and social stability are the most important ones. Fourth and finally, Ambassador Gao concluded her presentation by focusing on the areas that can be improved in the relationships that China establishes with other countries, most notably the EU. These areas include strengthening political mutual trust, expanding cooperation scope for mutual benefit, and promoting cultural and people to people exchanges.

The opening speech was given by John Shattuck, Rector and President of CEU, and the event was chaired by Péter Balázs, Director of CENS and former Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs.
