The location of Cyprus in the center of the Eastern Mediterranean area, its full membership to the EU and its stable/democratic political system have established the government of the Republic of Cyprus as a safe “hub” for the interests of the EU and other major global players ie USA, Canada, Russia. This role strongly emerged during the last decade due to the unstable political situation in the Middle East, as well as due to the possibility of a regional conflict resulting in a massive evacuation of population towards Cyprus. Furthermore, the very promising potential of hydrocarbon exploration in the Levantine basin requires that all countries in the region work closely together, bilaterally and regionally. Cooperation can have a positive spillover in the political relations between the Eastern Mediterranean countries and hopefully this cooperation will serve as the keystone for the progress of a peaceful and well developed area on the far south east part of the European Union.
